Ingredients
  

Apples
  • 6 cups peeled and chopped apples Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor.
Spices
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Sweetener
  • 1 cup brown sugar Adjust to taste.
  • ½ cup granulated sugar Adjust to taste.
Liquid
  • ½ cup apple cider

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples with brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and apple cider.
Cooking
  1. Transfer the apple mixture to the crockpot and cover.
  2. Cook on low for 8 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and the mixture is thickened.
  3. Once cooked, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth, or transfer to a blender in batches.
  4. Cook uncovered for an additional 1-2 hours on low to thicken further if desired.
Finishing
  1. Allow the apple butter to cool before transferring to jars for storage.
  2. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or process in a water bath for longer shelf life.
