Ingredients
  

Doughnut Batter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Toppings
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for glazing
  • 2 tablespoons milk for glaze
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for glaze

Method
 

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and melted butter.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes until smooth.
  5. Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick and cut out doughnuts using a cookie cutter.
Fry the Doughnuts
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the doughnuts in batches for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  3. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
Glaze the Doughnuts
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
  2. Dip the warm doughnuts into the glaze and let them set on a wire rack.

Notes

For a chocolate glaze, substitute cocoa powder for half of the powdered sugar in the glaze.
